Question of the day.

Every year, this branch on one of my Japanese maples turns red before the rest of the tree. Can anyone tell me why?

  1. More than likely it is a sport. (from Wikipedia)- In botany, a sport is a part of a plant (normally a woody plant, but sometimes in herbs as well) that shows morphological differences from the rest of the plant. Sports may differ by foliage shape or color, flowers, or branch structure.

  2. I'm just seeing your post and thank you so much for letting me know about "sports." I'm always amazed by what I don't know about plants. I guess it takes a lifetime and a village.
